Edgar Allan Poe uses concrete language and physical description to cast certain emotions to his audience. Within his descriptions, he perfectly picks words to strike horror and dread. Through his writing, Poe has become one who will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered as one of the pivotal writers in the romantic period of writing. In his works â€Å"The Cask of Amontillado†, â€Å"The Raven†, and â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†, he strategically describes people, events, and places for his readers to feel the full effect and emotion he wants. To understand how Edgar Allan Poe utilized descriptive paragraphs and so carefully picked his words, we must understand the writing period he engaged in. Birch states in his article, â€Å"Poes latest analyst calls him manic-depressive Researcher links illness, inspiration†, that Poe’s fellow students at the University of Virigina described him as a volatile personality. A volatile personality is basically a loose cannon. At one moment, he could be sober, and in an instant, angry. Consequently, his works reflected much of who he was. Nonetheless, Poe used his mental unstableness, whether he meant to or not, to conceive some of the most intense stories ever told. â€Å"The Cask of Amontillao† holds some of Poeâ€⠄¢s more descriptive language. He writes in a simple yet elegant way which allows any reader to feel the full emotion of the work. Although simple, the short story is complex in a couple of ways. In summary, Montresor’s pride has been hurt by his once friend, Fortunato. Montresor takes Fortunato to his vaults where he claims to have a bottle of Amontillado.
